Sustainable Coastlines

Jen Wilson from Design By Nature believes that as she makes her living from promoting New Zealand's coastline that she has an obligation to help protect it. This belief is behind her association with the charity Sustainable Coastlines. For every item sold by Design By Nature Jen donates a portion of the profit to help continue their work. See below for what this organisation is all about and visit their website for upcoming events here in NZ and overseas.

  1. Our vision

What we do and why we do it

Sustainable Coastlines sets out to protect and sustain our coastlines.

This is at the core of everything we do. We care about the environment and we work with our sleeves rolled up. We organise and support ongoing events around the world. Why? To make positive, real and long-term changes to local coastlines, globally.

Together with a passionate, motivated, and talented team of volunteers, staff, and supporters, the journey has just begun

    Our mission

    Sustainable Coastlines provides ideas,

coordination and support to communities to

initiate, pursue and take ownership of local

projects that will help improve their particular

    coastal environment.

We support such initiatives by working alongside local organisations, providing:

    Fresh Perspectives

    Information

    Energy

    Comparative analysis

    Volunteers

    Funding

    Awareness

Sustainable Coastlines co-ordinates and supports projects involving:

    Coastal Clean up Operations

    Recycling Systems Education

    Sustainable Revenue Practices

The primary public benefit that is achieved through such efforts is a more sustainable environment. This benefits the whole community in terms of recreation, biodiversity, tourism and public health with a focus on education.

    Our purpose

    > Coastal Clean-up operations

Our activities reduce the human impact on the environment primarily through the removal of non biodegradable waste. The Trust’s coastal clean up operations make a visual difference to the coast, create awareness and involve the whole community as much as possible.

    > Advancement of education

We provide education and ensure learning is passed on to others through organising events that develop participant’s understanding of our impact on the environment and ways in which we can reduce this impact so as to sustain this resource for future generations.

The educational component of our events is aimed to encompass all parts of the community however we particularly focus on schools with ideas, support and coordination of local initiatives.

Primarily our education component has been facilitated through recycling demonstrations, and providing constructive incentives as a reward for participation such as sporting equipment, trips to experience a marine reserve or other special ecosystem.

Education is also provided through interaction with the environment to increase understanding of the importance of conservation and sustainability.

    > Promoting Sustainable Revenue Practices

We promote sustainable revenue practices, taking a holistic view of the environment.  These are projects aimed at increasing the sustainability of community resources. We achieve this by providing such projects with:
